Start from something in the shop and change the size, species and finish — or send us dimensions, a sketch or a photo.

02

See the wood first

A $40 four-pack of hardwood samples, stained in the colors you are considering, shipped to your door.

03

We build it

Cut, joined and finished by hand in our Grand Rapids shop. Most pieces take 8–10 weeks.

04

It arrives

Delivered to your door as standard, or white glove if you would like it brought in and set up.

Why a solid hardwood table is worth the wait

A mass-produced dining table is a thin layer of printed laminate over particle board. It looks right in a showroom, holds up for a few years, and cannot be repaired when it stops looking right. That is the whole category we exist against.

Every Lumber2Love table starts as rough lumber in our Grand Rapids shop. It is milled, joined with mortise and tenon rather than screws and cam locks, sanded through progressive grits, and finished by hand. A table built this way can be sanded back and refinished decades from now, which is why the ones we built early on are still in service.

Choosing your wood

Walnut runs deep chocolate with dramatic grain. White oak is lighter, tighter and takes stain evenly, which makes it the most versatile. Maple is the brightest and hardest. Cherry darkens beautifully with age. Hickory has the most contrast between light and dark. There is no wrong answer, which is why we would rather you hold four samples in your own kitchen than pick from a screen.

What we build

Round, oval, rectangular and square dining tables from 42 inches to twelve feet. Expandable tables with self-storing or separate leaves for people who need six seats most days and ten at Thanksgiving. Pedestal bases when you want nobody straddling a table leg, trestles and steel when you want the look.

Then everything around the table: dining chairs and bar stools finished to match, coffee tables, sideboards and credenzas, desks, and shuffleboard, ping pong and poker tables for the room where people actually hang out.

And for businesses

Roughly half of what leaves our shop goes into restaurants, hotels and offices — contract-grade conference tables with integrated power and data, banquettes, restaurant tabletops and commercial seating. Designers and dealers work with us through the Trade & Design Program.

Behind the dust

It started as a mistake in a garage.

Ryan and Amanda built one table, then another, then could not stop. Today there are 27 people on the floor in Grand Rapids building furniture by hand for homes and businesses across the country.

Everything is still made here. Nothing is imported, nothing is drop-shipped, and the people who build your piece are the people you will talk to about it.

Custom furniture questions, answered

All FAQs

Is Lumber2Love furniture really solid hardwood?

Almost always, yes — tops, bases and frames are solid American hardwood, cut and joined in our shop. The one exception is our starburst and compass tops. A radial pattern like that cannot be made from solid boards without tearing itself apart as the wood moves, so those tops use a premium hardwood veneer over a solid core and frame. It is how high-end architectural millwork is built, and it is noted on every product that offers it.

Can I customize the size, wood and finish?

Yes — that is the whole business. Choose the size, shape, species, stain and base design on any piece. Round tables run 42″ to 96″; rectangles are built to whatever length your room takes. If you want something that is not in the shop at all, send a sketch to our custom request form.

What wood species do you use?

Walnut, white oak, maple, red oak and hickory as standard, with other species on request. Finishes range from a clear coat that shows the raw grain through to Espresso, Bourbon, Ebony and True Black, plus custom color matching. See Materials & Finishes for the full range.

How long does a custom dining table take to build?

Most pieces take 8–10 weeks. Because everything is built to order, the exact timeline depends on the design and what is already on the schedule — so we give you a date range when you order rather than a vague promise.

Can I see wood samples before I order?

Please do. The Stain Sample 4-Pack is $40 and gets you four hardwood squares in the species and colors you are weighing up, so you can see them in your own light next to your own floor. Samples ship right away.

Do you ship custom furniture outside Michigan?

Yes, nationwide. Standard delivery brings your piece to your door — the driver may help bring it in, but plan on having a hand available. White glove service brings it inside, places it and sets it up. Details on Shipping & Delivery.

Do you make furniture for restaurants, hotels and offices?

Yes. Contract-grade tables, banquettes, conference tables with integrated power and data, credenzas and commercial seating. COM accepted. Start at Commercial & Contract Furniture or, if you are a designer or dealer, the Trade & Design Program.

Will a handmade hardwood table last?

That is what it is built for. Solid hardwood, mortise and tenon joinery, hand-applied finishes, and a base assembled as one piece rather than bolted together. Wood moves over the years and picks up character marks — that is real furniture doing what real furniture does, not a defect. See Cleaning & Maintenance to keep it right.

Not sure where to start?

Start with $40 of wood in your hand.

Four hardwood samples, stained in the colors you are considering. It is the fastest way to know whether walnut or white oak is right for your room.
